St Vincent de Paul Society

History

The St Vincent de Paul Society is an international catholic organisation of lay people and was founded some 169 years ago by Frederick Ozanam and his companions (6 in all) in 1883.
It all started one cold freezing night when Frederick and his friend Augustus La Taillande, carried firewood to a poor family in Paris.

Since then, St Vinnies has spread to some 150 countries around the world including Australia. The St Vinnies Conference was founded in Australia on 24 July 1881 by Charles Gordon O’Neill at St Patrick’s Church Hill, Sydney and began operating Australia wide in 1885.
(A conference is a group of people (members) who meet on a regular basis in their parish or area for the purpose of helping the the poor or needy.)

St Vinnies is the only charity that goes into homes of the poor and needy to render assistance. There is a broad range of services and facilities, called Special Works, which are available. Special Works include:

  • Vinnies Support Centre - VSC
